So after a 30 Favorite Songs show last week, we basically ended up with 30 Favorite Albums too! After MUCH deliberation, that is. It's a 3 step, month-long process each year: 1) scanning several high- and low-profile Best Of lists, until my brain starts to freeze; 2) listening back through the albums I'm fairly comfortable I'm going to include, just to make sure (some of these don't necessarily get in, like The Strokes & Teddy Thompson this year, although I still dig 'em); and then finally, 3) blitzing through all the albums I shoulda/coulda/woulda listened to throughout the year, ha! In other words, I don't just pick the 10 albums I listened to most or whatever and call it a day. I really do try to pick what I feel like best represents my year in music. This year, it was even crazier than usual since I'll freely admit I didn't find myself listening to many albums all the way through at all. A big part of it was my addiction to sports talk radio, especially after my car cd player went on the fritz. There was also PJ20 in Wisconsin in Sept., so I spent a good chunk of the year basking in the pre-and post-glow of that and remembering how great it was to be 17 in 1991 (so I probably should've ranked my #5 "grunge revival" as #1 instead of Gillian Welch, oh well)! And hey, I got married, so I spent a couple months putting together the best wedding party favor mix cd in the world, EVER! Mission Accomplished :)
Cheers!
Jeff
p.s. as you'll notice, only the Top 5 were "ranked"...I consider the other 25 pretty equal. And with only 15-20 minutes left til it was a full 3 hour show, I added some bonus cuts to take us to 1am, so we'll call it a 33 1/3 list!

not sure if it was a function of my ever-decreasing attention span (wanting shorter songs and/or a variety of artists on an album…I almost made Gorillaz my #1!) or maybe the fact that posthumous releases (Hendrix, Cash), re-issues (Bruce, Lennon, Dylan, Bowie, Stones, Keith Richards and Weezer), live albums (Regina Spektor) and boxsets (Pearl Jam live in Philly, Matador at 21) kind of overshadowed my musical landscape in 2010 (there was even a who-woulda-thunk-it Pavement Best Of collection!), but 2 EPs and 2 tribute albums really struck me and made the top 5! Actually, I should probably rank the Arcade Fire ahead of the Silverstein tribute, but I wanted to play songs off both tribute albums back-to-back, and the Prine ended up being #1!
more Grooveshark playlists coming soon via widgets to this here page…happy listening and discovering in the new year!

FAVORITE SONGS OF 2010 SHOW! (no particular order til Top 8)
~a couple of these artists may also make appearances on our favorite albums show next week!
Felt Letters “600,000 bands”
(thanks to allmusic.com’s list of their 52 songs of the year)
Best Coast – “Boyfriend”
(see also Dum Dum Girls and Frankie & the Outs for some good vintage pop soundz)
Surfer Blood – “Swim”
(what’s with all the coastal/waves/surfing stuff this year?)
The Hours – “Ali in the Jungle”
(one of many indie-tastic songs used in ad campaigns in 2010)
Mumford & Sons – “The Cave”
(this one proved they were more than just a 1-f-bomb-hit wonder)
Screaming Females – “I Don’t Mind It”
(even before they opened for Ted Leo at The Southern, I tracked this song down in the blogosphere and became an instant fan)
Galactic w/ Irma Thomas – “Heart of Steel”
(who would’ve ever thought The Saints would win the Super Bowl?)
Angelique Kidjo w/ Bono & John Legend – “Move On Up”
(great Curtis Mayfield cover)
Phantogram – “When I’m Small”
(Beach House, Matt & Kim, Sleigh Bells all got more pub, but this male/female duo was more palatable to my ears)
Ra Ra Riot – “Boy”
(love that bassline!)
Crystal Castles w/ Robert Smith – “Not in Love”
(obscure 80s cover made more sense with Mr. Cure on it!)
Sleigh Bells – “Tell ‘Em”
(not sure about their karaoke-like live show, but love the “did you do your best today?” chorus!)
Sahara Smith – “The Real Thing”
(don’t miss the Austin songstress in Cville 1/25)
Horse Feathers – “Belly of June”
Sarah Jaffe – “Clementine”
Delta Spirit – “Bushwick Blues”
Backyard Tire Fire – “Good To Be”
So all the above are more or less equal in my mind as I look back on 2010…the next 8 however, I felt deserved a bit higher designation…so I present to you The BTC Top 8 of 2010!
8. John Legend & The Roots – “Hard Times”
7. Ray LaMontagne & the Pariah Dogs – “Beg, Steal or Borrow”
6. Alejandro Escovedo – “Anchor” (great to have him play a Corner Lounge version for us in January before the album had even been recorded!)
5. Magnetic Fields – “You Must Be Out of Your Mind”
4. Middle Class Rut – “New Low”
3. Cee Lo Green – “Forget You” (I thought this was gonna be the best song radio couldn’t play in 2010, so thanks for doing the revised lyrics, Cee!)
2. Jenny & Johnny – “Big Wave” (“we work hard for our living wage/but still the banks got a break” boy did they ever!)
1. The Soft Pack – “Answer To Yourself” (video posted on BTC page at 1061thecorner.com!)
Thanks for listening and here’s to another great year of music in 2011!

It was a dramatic year; it was a harsh year. Two picks tied for #1 on my Favorite Albums of ’08 show (sorry, was scheduled to do it last week, but had a last-minute, family-related change of plans). One #1 pick makes dramatic music and has a harsh name, while the other cloaked harsh lyrics in dramatic Danger Mouse soundscapes. Anything outside of the Top 5, I couldn’t really bring myself to rank, but the 30 cutoff felt right. And yes, I preferred 5 local bands to whatever it may seem I’m missing…that’s why I call it a “Favorite Albums” show and not a “The Best That Everyone Seems To Agree On But Puts In A Different Order” show :) Take that, blogosphere! Hahaha…although I guess the term “local band” means less and less with the interwebs and such…maybe in ’09 bands will stop identifying where they’re from and only tell fans which commercials their music’s been in. It’ll be like NASCAR…bring on globalization, I say! OK, maybe hearing “Super Bon Bon” on a car commercial the other day is still lingering in my mind…oof.Cheers to an '09 filled with more great music!

Songs from Top 25 albums next week…I reserve the right to rectify any of these selections with things I may have overlooked or had a change of heart about in the 1st couple of shows of 08, stay tuned!)
p.s. There are certainly plenty of places in the blogosphere to discover the next “it” band, but my extensive search through many of the most touted sites hasn’t led me to much that I’ve gotten really passionate about (this year anyway)…it’s certainly expanded my horizons and kept me on my toes as to what young kids are getting into, and a lot of it is pretty good, but I guess I’m showing my age or maybe it’s a function of bloggers listening through crappy computer speakers or just seeing how gullible their readership is (what’s power if you don’t test it out once in a while?) or the insular listening experience of an iPod (with headphones on, of course), but a lot of what I read a lot of hype about, I just say, I’d rather listen to ________ or wow, that’s just not good at all. Maybe that’s the problem…too many people are reading about music and not listening. Just a thought. OK, I’m done ranting. Quit reading! Thanks for listening! My choices are no better than anyone else’s. But hopefully they’ll lead you to music you too can enjoy as much as I did this year. That’s what makin’ lists is about, to me anyway. Cheers! And happy 08! Oh wait! Tune in next week…we’ll have Joy Division giveaways! Because what says happy holidays better than the Joy Division collection?!
